NCHA Hall of Fame Rider & Trainer
Monty was born in Prescott, AZ, where he continues to have family in the surrounding area. Funny enough, his wife Tessa was born in the same hospital in Prescott, but the two didn’t meet until 2007 at the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo, which is held every July in their hometown.
Monty was living in Texas when they met and was just visiting friends and family when he encountered Tessa, and their story began. The two married in 2008 and moved to Texas to work for Bob Adkins at the ranch he purchased from Buster Welch; a legend of a man to all who know cowboys and cutting. Monty worked alongside Buster, his grandson, and others at the ranch before the couple traveled back to the west coast to work for one of the greats in cutting. Monty honed his skills under NCHA & PCCHA Hall of Fame rider and longtime friend, Tim Smith, back in 2009 and 2010. Since then, he has claimed many PCCHA weekend year end titles, has made the finals in all of the NCHA major aged events, and continues to be one of the top Open riders in the NCHA. Monty was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame in 2020 after he crossed the million dollars in NCHA earnings mark in March of 2019, and is currently working toward his third million. In June of 2019, Monty took a short break from shows to enjoy being a Dad to his son Riggs, who loves to do all things Dad does. He calls the Triple Crown Equestrian Center in Lincoln, California, home. Monty caters to all levels of cutting from beginner lessons for amateurs and non-pro’s, to weekend haulers and aged event competitors. He has teamed up with his longtime friend and mentor, Tim Smith, to create Buntin & Smith Present, The Cutting Experience, for cutters who want to advance their skills and learn the secrets the top professionals use in the show pen.
